This book does not lend itself to review by standard measures. The story was all right, but it could have garnered four stars. The profanity was rediculous. Fragmented sentences were bad, but at times I could see why the author wrote in that manner. The characters and scenery were well developed.James Muir, with a handful of followers, was on a quest to find the oracle believing that his family and his world would be restored when he possessed the oracle. A rival was on the same quest creating danger for James and his group. There was danger from other survivors of Lights Out as they all scrounged for food, water and shelter. I would have liked a bit more on how good people turn bad when they hurt for the necessities of life. The author built a compelling read as James searched for the oracle, but, upon reaching his mission, the story became flat. I wanted to read an outstanding finale and was disappointed when that didn't happen.

I got this ebook free in a contest on Goodreads and am I ever happy I did. I really enjoyed the ride it took me on and can't wait to read the next in the series.
First of all, the characters are well developed and compelling. Even the minor characters have traits that make them memorable. The group's interactions as they get to know each other were compelling and I came to like and understand more of them.
Occasionally, there was a part that was difficult to follow and visualize but these were the exception. I hope that the "green dust" will be better explained in the next book along with a few other sketchy details.
Overall, I found myself missing the characters when away and wanted to get back to reading. I even stayed up very late last night to finish and with only 3 hours of sleep, hope that his review makes sense.
I would recommend (and already have) The Betelgeuse Oracle to anyone who enjoys dystopian literature and scifi.

Great read for anyone even slightly interested in the preparedness movement. This book lets you experience first-hand how quickly society could unravel in the face of an environmental disaster and I couldn't help thinking about what I'd do in this scenario. I think it's particularly potent because you can't possibly anticipate the event or its effects even though the knowledge that something like this could happen hits the news now and again. I also like that the main character is a jaded security guard. Certainly leaves you waiting for next book.
Macchiusi's book reminds me that we are at all times one colossal collapse away from a descent down the ladder of `evolution', sophistication, and self-importance. The way the lines between man and animal become blurred is frighteningly realistic, a strong foreshadowing of the raw instinct to survive and violence that lies within. It does not attempt to hide what is both awful and wonderful in our nature. It shows the chaos that would ensue if the little bubbles we've built for ourselves happened to pop. Overall, an entertaining and -more importantly- extremely thought provoking read, from a great writer, and an even better teacher.
The Betelgeuse Oracle is a terrific book that is very difficult to put down. The characters are real; the situations they find themselves in are believable when life as we know it changes, and everything we take for granted is gone. I found I was truly asking myself how I would behave in the same circumstances and empathising with the characters as they faced the next challenge. Throw in some ancient, long forgotten powers and a little supernatural, and Macchiusi gives the reader plenty to think about in this first book in the Betelgeuse Chronicles. A truly fabulous read, I can't wait for the next one!
Macchiusi forces you to face your greatest fears in this gripping adventure that demonstrates the weaknesses and strengths of humanity. A must read.

A complex but very riveting contemporary science fiction novel, in which the end of Civilization occurs in a manner few of us expect (well, maybe some scattered astrophysicists might). What I found so frightening was not the loss of electricity and communications; we expect that. Nor the breakdown of law; that's expected too. What scares is the accompanying insanity, seemingly unrelated to the "loss" of civilizing influences, and especially the "this-could-really-happen and-soon" nature of the cataclysmic, catastrophic, event.
